How Does Tirzepatide Work for Weight Loss?

Tirzepatide belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists.

These receptors mimic naturally occurring hormones in your gut that help regulate blood sugar levels, slow gastric emptying (how quickly food moves through your stomach), and influence the brain’s hunger and satiety centers.

Tirzepatide helps reduce hunger, increase feelings of fullness, and slow the rate at which food leaves the stomach by activating both GLP-1 and GIP receptors.

This not only supports better glucose control but also encourages a sustained reduction in calorie intake, which can lead to meaningful weight loss over time.

Tirzepatide’s unique combination of effects on metabolic processes helps improve overall energy balance and supports healthier body weight outcomes.

Dosage and Administration

Starting Dose

A typical starting dose might be 2.5mg once a week for the first month. This allows your body to adjust to the medication and for your provider to see how you respond to the medication since it can be variable.

Dose Increase

Over the next months, the dosage is increased each month—often to 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or even higher—depending on how you tolerate the medication, how well it’s working, and how much weight you need to lose to achieve a normal BMI.

Maintenance Dose

Once the effective dose is reached, you’ll continue taking it once a week at that level until you reach a normal BMI for most patients. for the remainder of your treatment plan. Some people may need a steady dose to maintain their goal BMI long-term.

De-escalation Dose

Once most patients have reached a normal BMI, we suggest a slow decrease in dose over time for those who have optimized their healthy routines and reached an ideal, normal BMI that is tailored to each patient to avoid significant rebound weight gain and avoid lowering the BMI to a level that is unsafe.

Injection and Frequency

Tirzepatide is injected subcutaneously (under the skin). Recommended sites to inject: abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites with each dose.

Storage and Handling

Store Tirzepatide in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) until you’re ready to use it. Once in use, you can keep Tirzepatide at room temperature, but it should not exceed 86°F (30°C) and must be used within 28 days. If Tirzepatide stays out of the fridge for longer than recommended, do not use it.

Keep in mind that the medication is not the solution to weight loss. You still need to pair compounded Tirzepatide with diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes.
